What happens when the nerve gets infected in our teeth? Can a filling fix the problem? The answer is no. Our teeth are alive structures. This means they have their own blood supply and nerve. When tooth damage progresses close to the centre, it can cause an infection to the nerve, resulting in severe pain and the spread of infection to the jaw bone. When this happens, removing a tooth could be a reasonable treatment choice. Since the infection source is inside the tooth, removing the tooth clears the infection. However, replacing the missing teeth can be difficult and costly. This is why we often try to save the tooth with a root canal procedure. Root canal procedures involve two main objectives: Cleaning to eliminate the infection inside the tooth and filling it to prevent it from coming back. We often need two to three appointments to achieve a satisfactory outcome. If you wish to find out more in detail, please contact us on our phone 02 6767 1601
